Uphold Debit Card Explained: Cashback, Limits, and Why It’s Getting Attention

The Uphold Debit Card is one of the newer crypto debit cards gaining attention in the U.S. It connects to an Uphold account and lets users spend money like a normal Visa card while earning XRP cashback on purchases.

The card is designed to bridge everyday spending with crypto rewards, allowing users to pay for things like food, shopping, and subscriptions while earning a small percentage back in crypto.

Two Card Options: Essential vs Elite

Uphold offers two versions of the card:

Essential Card (Free)

  • 2% XRP cashback on purchases after the promo period
  • No annual fee
  • Lower rewards cap (about $120/month max)

Elite Card ($99/year)

  • 3% cashback on fiat or stablecoin spending
  • 4% cashback on crypto or metals spending
  • Higher rewards cap (about $300/month max)
  • No foreign transaction fees and no ATM fees

Example: $100 Purchase

A simple $100 purchase shows how the cashback works:

  • Essential card → $2 back in XRP
  • Elite card → $3 to $4 back in XRP

Even small purchases give instant rewards, but the value stays modest unless spending increases.

Example: $500 Monthly Spending

At around $500 per month in spending:

  • Essential card → about $10 cashback
  • Elite card → about $15 to $20 cashback

This is where the Elite card starts to stand out, especially for people using it for daily expenses like groceries, gas, or online shopping.

Monthly Cashback Limits

There are caps on how much users can earn each month:

  • Essential card → up to $120/month max rewards
  • Elite card → up to $300/month max rewards

Once users hit the cap, no additional cashback is earned that month.

Why the Elite Card Matters for Heavy Spenders

While the Essential card works for casual users, the Elite card becomes more valuable for higher monthly spending because:

  • Higher cashback percentage (up to 4%)
  • Much higher monthly reward limit
  • Extra perks like no foreign transaction fees

For users spending $1,000 or more per month, the cashback can become more meaningful and may help offset the $99 annual fee over time.
